If your art isn't selling, the problem isn't the quality

I’ll tell you straight up, without beating around the bush. If your art isn’t selling, in most cases, the problem isn’t the quality of your work.

I know this statement is annoying. Because it’s easier to think that “the market doesn’t get it,” that “social media is holding us back,” or that “everything is saturated these days.”

But after years of making a living from my creativity, one thing has become crystal clear to me:👉 no one buys what they don’t understand.

Being good isn't enough anymore

There are so many talented artists out there today—illustrators, designers, painters, and photographers with incredible technical skills.

Yet many of them don't sell. Not because they aren't worth it, but because they don’t know how to communicate the value of what they do.

Quality is essential, but on its own, it speaks for itself. It needs to be communicated.

The real problem is communication

When someone looks at your work but doesn't buy it, this is what often happens:

  • He doesn't understand why it's different

  • doesn't understand why he should choose you

  • doesn't understand what's behind it

And if something isn't clear, it doesn’t spark desire.

This is where everything I talk about in my book and newsletters comes into play: personal branding, storytelling, and positioning.

You don't sell artworks; you sell meaning

People don't just buy a design, a bottle, or an illustration. They buy:

  • a story

  • a vision

  • a world in which to find oneself

That’s the same reason why a bottle can cost €30 or €3,000. The glass doesn’t change. The meaning does.

The leap you need to take (if you really want to sell)

If you want to start selling consistently, you need to stop asking yourself:

“Why aren’t they buying?”

And start asking yourself:

“Am I really explaining who I am and why I do what I do?”

Because as long as you only communicate the final result, you'll remain just one of many.

But when you start telling the story:

  • the process

  • the choices

  • your vision

  • your reason

you start to become recognizable.

The uncomfortable (but liberating) truth

There’s no need to change your style. There’s no need to lose your authenticity. There’s no need to follow ridiculous trends.

You need to learn how to better express who you already are.

And that’s exactly where my book begins Turn Your Art into a Business: not from “how to sell more,” but from how to make yourself better understood.

In conclusion

If your art doesn't sell, don't take it personally right away . But don’t kid yourself either.

Focus on quality, yes. But above all, focus on how you present it to the world.

Because talent without communication remains unseen. And, unfortunately, unseen art doesn’t sell.
